Bird Airport Information for Pilots
Vital Statistics:
Latitude: 48-13-52 North
Longitude 116-13-18 West
Elevation 2250 (at the South end of the runway)
Use the Coeur d'Alene Unicom frequency 122.8 for traffic advisories.
Runway information
Designations: 35 and 17
Surface: asphalt paved
Dimensions: 40 ft. x 1900 ft
The first 100 ft. of pavement at the South end of the runway should be considered a displaced threshold.
The runway slopes uphill to the North. Total gradient is 50 ft.
The runway curves 7 degrees to the right at approximately midfield when landing to the North.
A 60 ft. wide turn-around area is provided at the North end of the runway.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
Bird Ranch Airport is for use by invitation only, except in an emergency.
A ridge line topped by 80 ft. trees is perpendicular to the runway only 400 ft. North of the runway end and parallel to the runway on the West side. Therefore, ALL TRAFFIC SHOULD LAND TO THE NORTH AND TAKEOFF TO THE SOUTH.
A conventional windsock is positioned approximately midfield and 250 ft. East of the runway. IF THE WIND IS UNFAVORABLE FOR A LANDING TO THE NORTH, YOU SHOULD DIVERT TO SANDPOINT AIRPORT (SZT).
DUE TO THE OBSTACLES SURROUNDING THE FIELD, THE DECISION TO MAKE A BALKED LANDING MUST BE MADE EARLY IN THE FINAL APPROACH, OR YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CLEAR THE TREES
WATCH OUT FOR DEER ON OR NEAR THE RUNWAY! (We often overfly the runway before landing just to chase them away).
